World AIDS Day 2011:

fuckyeahgenderstudies:

Today, Dec 1, is World AIDS Day.

And even though there have been some terrible setbacks for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and research this year (funding cuts; the news that the contraceptive injection most commonly used in Africa actually increases one’s susceptibility to infection; the pope (still); and so on), i’m determined to focus on the positives.

Despite the devastating effect of HIV and AIDS, it’s important to remember the innumerable advances we’ve seen worldwide. Since its discovery thirty years ago treatment for HIV and AIDS has come a remarkable way—farther than can be said for any other illness.

For some indication of how far, please watch this video from The Topsy Foundation:

and then this video from (RED) about ARV treatment & The Lazarus Effect:

and know that there has been a worldwide drop in AIDS-related deaths.

But also, know this: In 2010, for the first time in a decade, worldwide funding for HIV and Aids dropped.

So, please, if you can, go to UNAIDS and donate now.
